Hongyun had Hemal, one of her De Anza buddies, visit us for thanksgiving. She arrived just in time for lunch so we wet over to Café Gratitude, the hippie-ish raw food emporium in the heart of the Gourmet Grotto on Shattuck.
So what's with this place and how come they don't wear deodorant? Well, the food is all raw meaning it hasn't been exposed to temperatures greater than 115 degrees farenheit. So we walk in, not realizing they we handing free food for turkey day (or in this place it would probably be called organic non-GMO free range humanely raised tofurkey day) and grab a seat at a communal table. We're instantly presented with smallish plates filled with raw vegan delights. I mean, thr food wasn't half bad, but would I eat it every day? Only if my life depended on it. An interesting feature of this restaurant was that they feature a question of the day that you get asked while scarfing your salad, cauliflower mashed 'potatoes' and mushroom gravy. Of course, the question for thanks giving is "what are you thankful for?" It was an odd experience to be asked this point blank by a stranger while trying to eat, but we made due.
Any way, if you're ready for a trip over to the extreme left side of the political spectrum and can deal with the inquisitive and overly friendly hippies, then I recommend hitting uo Café Gratitude once in a while to remind you that yeah...this is Berkeley.
