Well it has finally happened. No, no...I haven't lost my mind (not yet at least). I've finally begun on the "Great Dodoskdo Cleanup of 2008". The side bar has been greatly trimmed and will be slowly replaced with more useful links rather than the absolute mishmash of yesteryear. The biggest change is the introduction of Haloscan into my life. Comment spam bots ("bots don't kill websites, spammers kill websites") were bringing my beefy virtual hosting machine to an absolute crawl and would periodically crash it. Thus, I've offloaded the problem to Haloscan. I'll be donating for a premium sub if it's up to snuff.

You'll also notice a culling of ads. I get annoyed by ads on other sites especially helpful but sleazy sites that breakup posts to pop in a giant google ad block. While the google income does help a bit, it doesn't net me enough to care if I loose a few bucks here and there as long as I bring up the performance of my pages and make it more legible.

Which brings me to colors. Yes, it's a little muddy, but I liked the Blade Runner cache it holds. Nevertheless, the colors and entire template will be hucked soon enough in favor of a more simple color scheme.

So what prompted the abrupt spurt of activity? Well, for one, Hongyun had her solo art exhibit opening this past evening (photos). The event went very well, but we were dead tired afterwards. Anyway, it was a huge load off our backs. Couple that with some insomnia and you'll see why I suddenly got the urge to move on cleaning up.

Anyway, good luck and good night.

Trying Haloscan for commenting since spambots are annoying.

Well, it's a little plain right now, but I've just installed and migrated everything over from my gallery to the Gallery 2 system. These guys have built a top notch system and I'm loving the possibilities already. Why have I gone through all of this hassle if my old Gallery 1.4.4 was running fine? There are several reasons.

1. The new theming system is very flexible and is similar to movable type's paradigm (lots of html and css, special tags for gallery bits)
2. MySql backend. I don't really care too much about this, but it's supposedly better (I've yet to "optimize" the database)
3. Nice built-in themes
4. Plug-in system (with a square thumbnail plugin!)
5. Cool Java applets that allow you to do things like drag and drop upload, crop certain parts as thumbnails.
6. Multi-site install saves space.

Anyway, I'm done fiddling for now...the images seem to be there, but I need to do some spring cleaning and work on theming. This will have to come in another day as I have to work on work stuff for now.

The leap to MT3.2 wasn't so hard (just had to remember to move the mt-static files to the right place). Let's see if this works now.

So after grabbing the new Canon Digital Rebel XT, my photo output has been nearly kaput. Or has it? Actually, things have been accumulating on the old hard drive as I twiddle with the super-cool RAW file format. Anyway, to clear the backlog, I've posted everything for the past month or so in one fell swoop and move the backlog off the chocked-full laptop hard drive.

See for Yourself.

So I've been looking for a good way to display my archives and thought about a tag cloud or something, but this may be a good way...
