Yesterday was Hongyun's birthday so I got her a little gift. What is it you ask? The iHome iH6. The iWhat? Well think of it this way...buying an iPod is so cliché since everyone has at least 3 of these things by now, so why not get some accessories for your tune-lover to use?

Hongyun listens to audiobooks before going to sleep and this thing will help her get some nice sound quality and adds dual alarm functions, wake to ipod and radio alarms, a backup battery so your alarm goes off in the event of a power outage, a remote that controls the iPod, and an AM/FM radio. There's even a nice dimmer switch to dim the backlight of the clock so you don't have this ultrabright glowing thing scorching your eyelids while you try to sleep.

The only downside we found is that it doesn't charge or play 3G or earlier iPods which is a bummer. You can still play through the device using the dock connector, but you have to push play on the 3G then push play on the iHome itself...not pretty, but hey the 3G is old anyway.

* Stanford Education on the Cheap *

I haven't had a chance to try it out since my iTunes stuff lives on my work computer but I am SO looking forward to checking this out.

Here's the low down: Stanford is giving away audio recordings of lectures for free. I'm hoping the "store" is relatively well organized so I can pick and choose what I need and compress months of learning into a weeks' worth of listening. I know it's usually not as good to just listen to the lectures, but it's a start (I'm hoping they have some architecture and business school classes for free download).

Oh yeah, other schools will have this as well, but who knows if/how much of it will be free

* Harry Potter on iTunes *

For the longest time, Hongyun and I were Audible.com fans. Eventually, however we let our audiobook subscription lapse since it lacked the two series of books we really cared about: Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings. Now, I've read both series and enjoy them immensely, but I've been wanting to reread them with the audiobook as a companion. Now, Apple has done it again. They've been able to obtain rights to distribute the Harry Potter Series via iTunes.

Wow what a day...iPod Nano, iTunes mobile, and Harry Potter.

Talk about a big day for Apple!
