Just found this article (from where I forgot), but it's a good article outlining the true costs of owning a house. It seems a little rough on the home owning experience, but I can tell you this...We've racked up quite the cash, 401K, and IRA hoard not to mention paying off both our cars and all revolving debt just inside of 5 years because we didn't buy a house.

Don't get me wrong, we got close to pulling the trigger a few times, but a chance meeting with an honest mortgage guy at the outset of the real estate boom kept us out of the housing fray. Basically he schooled me on why we could barely afford (at the time) a 400K place, let alone the 700K that was typical for a "normal house" (again at the time).

I believe the guy's name was Gabriel Bodner who is now with Countrywide. Just goes to show you that some mortgage guys are straight up good folks who look out for you and explain to you the ins and outs of what kind of crap you are about to step into before you actually sign on the dotted line.

Anyway, our current POR (plan of record)? Steady as she goes until 2009 or 2010 and build the continue building the cash hoard (I want to be able to say "20% down? How about 30%?").
