I don't want to get into a "Microsoft's PhDs are better than Google's PhDs" flame war, but just check this out...
Microsoft Live Labs: Photosynth - Video Overview
I am just dumbfounded by how insanely cool this thing is. While Google has some of the best brains on Earth in certain areas, Microsoft has the best brains on Earth in just about every area of computing, cognitive science/user experience, and a host of other disciplines.
Photosynth is just simply amazing and I hope it become productized sooner rather than later.

p.s. On second glance it appears that the technology mixes some very nifty graphics tools developed at SeaDragon, combined with a project under way at Microsoft. If you are interested in seeing which parts come from which company, it is worthwhile looking through old articles about SeaDragon demos.

I don't have an opinion on the question of which company has better people. But the brilliance of this product (and it is brilliant) is not quite relevant, since it was developed by an independent company, SeaDragon. SeaDragon was then acquired by Microsoft.
