Today, Hongyun becomes a citizen. Immigration is cool (except when it's illegal). I'm not sure where the whole idea of illegal immigration becoming a "debate" or "discussion" in this country. I mean seriously, which part of "illegal" is not understood...oh I see perhaps it should be changed to "immigracion illegales" lest we forget we're a culturally sensitive nation. But seriously, I really dug Bush'S whole plan to deal with illegal immigration (and yes he's targeting Mexico...you didn't hear him sending any troops to shore up our northern border did you?). I'll give it sucks that he proposed a way for those already here illegally to "get out of it" basically scott free, but it's a fair deal I think. I would add that if you are illegal and anyone in your family has been convicted of a crime like robbery, document fraud, drug possession or trafficing etc that you and your family should basically be ejected from the countrywithout question. The fact of the matter is that on a percentage basis, illegal immigrants use more public resources (medical, police, educational, etc) than citiEns do. This is adocumented fact (at least here in California). This is the real debate...should we extend services to people who choose to jump in line and violate our laws? My take: absolutely not. If you're hard working and are here illegally, fine. Get in line, get legal, and pay taxes. If you're taking advantage of our welfare system by having 6 kids and 2 of them are in jail...that's not fair to the others here and causing triouble.
Some will say this is not their fault...that it's a problem with the neighborhoods they grew up in. My response: you are the neighborhood, you are responsible. People create neighborhoods. Also if you read Freakinomics, you'll realize that You are responsible on a genetic level as well.
