* Best External Enclosure: Found *
comments

Leave it to the Slashdot gang to help me find the best external enclosure (duh, should have looked there first although this post is fairly recent).

Anyway, the AMS Venus DS-2316CBK seems to be the consensus on the most reliable and desirable drive enclosure for several reasons:

1. It has a nice construction quality.
2. It has a virtual silent cooling fan and duct system that keeps the drive and circuitry cool (which is the main reason external drives tend to fail)
3. And it is reasonably priced at $54 for the IDE to USB/Firewire version and $49 for the SATA to USB version.

So now you know. Cooling matters and this enclosure seems to do it right and quietly.

I'll probably order one when my 300GB comes back from Maxtor.
