Last night's episode exposed quite bit about the origin of the hatch and Desmond's plight...or did it? It did reveal a nebulous reserach organization called The Hanso Foundation that setup Swan station on the island. Anyway, I'm not sure who is right...is it just an experiment to see how long someone will push a button? Or is it real? TV Squad has the list of theories going around so far. The theory around the black smoke and the "security system" invisible-dinosaur seems to be the most logical to me, but who knows.
