Microsoft gives MSN TV a face-lift | CNET News.com

Sweet!!! This is what I've been working on for about the past year and it's exciting to see it in the news finally. Sorry, I can't give any more details than what is said in the cnet article, but trust me...it's really cool and you'll know more very very soon!

I have an msntv2, and I love it if only for its simplicity. I dont have enough patience (nor need) for a regular computer. This gets me e mail and net..enough for this old man. Any suggestions for the type of TV I should get (about 13inch) the TV I use now is going fast...

Calobe Jackson,Jr.:

Can I hook a wireless adapter to the USB Port of the MSN2 Unit?

Dailey:

Anyone connect MSN TV 2 not thru their computers but directly from Adelphia or SBC broadband ethernet connection?

Please email me directly @ dailey@webtv.net

RE: MSNTV-2

If I want high speed internet and all that goes with it, like streaming video, what do I have to do?

I will have a DSL line coming in, and from here on I need help. Today I was told that I would have to go through a PC, with a ethernet card and the into the B-92 modem in the MSNTV-2, in order to get "true" broadband. I was told if I plug my DSL line directly into the MSN-2 that I will get about 5 times faster the WEBTV.......but not true broadband.

Now the question, can I put the DSL line into anything like a router with a ethernet card attached and then into the MSN-2, in order get "real" high speed. The capability is there and there must be a way to avail ourselves of it without going through a PC.

No PIP because there is no TV Tuner (Your TV can do PIP can't it?)

No Scrapbook or Pagebuilder at launch time, but trust me it's in the works (no guarantees on whenn though as no one is sure yet).

I still don't understand the obsession with using monitor. The original MSN TV (WebTV) did not have this ability either so why all of the fuss about monitors? There are ways to get it to do that (RCA to VGA converters do exist), but why I'm not sure that it's even worth it.

Unknown:

No monitor can be hooked up.
No Crapbook or page builder will be on it.
No PIP (Picture in Picture)

DocZ:

Currently our MSNTV boxes support some older versions of Real Audio.
Real Audio V4 and and G2 are still quite popular (RA and RAM files) and many radio stations around the world are streaming in these formats.
Will this new MSNTV-2 unit still support these?

I hear that the new LBB will not have PIP. Is that right? Thank...AUdrey

Astyanax:

Instead of allowing a PC monitor to be connected to it, I'm sure it would be better for everyone if they just released PC client software that would be able to connect to their MSN TV network. That way you don't even need to have your MSN TV console around.

Hmmm...I'm not sure why using a monitor as a display device instead of your TV would allow you to do away with the PC? Whatever display device you use, the functionality on the MSNTV 2 box is the same. If the functions of your PC are duplcated by MSNTV 2 (email, web surfing, chat, MSN Messenger, etc.) then by all means your PC's days are limited. If you have other functionality that you require from your PC that MSNTV 2 does not have, then you should keep the PC as well.

People should understand that MSN TV 2 will be perfect for people who have need for a second computer for web surfing, chat, MSN Messenger, enjoying digital media, etc. Example: Let's say your home PC is shared between you, your spouse, and your children. If you are using your PC and you kid wants to do homework, they cana login to the MSN TV service and will have access to the Internet to do their homework. While searching for info for their term paper, the kids will be able to connect to the home PC that you're using and play some music to make their homework experience a little less stressful. If they find useful websites, they can print those websites, email links of the sites to themselves, or save them as favorites...I'd email it to myself. Once you're done with the PC, just send an IM to your kid and they will receive it on the MSN TV 2. When you kid logins to the PC, they can continue their homework experience by grabbing the useful links they found on MSN TV 2 from their email, fire up Windows Media Player to continue enjoying their music, and fire up Microsoft Word to type their paper.

So you can see that MSN TV 2 does not replace all of the PC's functionality; it's not meant to. Quite simply, it can work as a standalone device that improve upon the current MSNTV experience by leaps and bounds (especially if you have broadband), but it's also great as a low cost alternative to a second PC in the home. Once they start appearing in stores, I think you'll be pleasantly suprised by how much functionality is in the box.

BlackBird:

Hi...MsnTV user here,

Don't know if you can answer this but if you can I wish you would...Is there going to be any way to hook a monitor up to this or is it going to be strictly TV display. I've been using msntv/webtv since jan. of 97" and also own a pc.

Laying in bed or laying on the sofa and surfing with one hand via the remote is great BUT this new box would be so much better IF it also let those who wanted to also use a pc monitor.

Using a monitor with the new box would basicly let me do away with the pc and ALL the hassles of keeping it updated, defraged and virus free_things you don't need to do or worry about with the msntv/msntv2 units.

Just thought i'd ask.

Yep..this is NOT going to be your grandma's webtv!!!
