Food Network: Iron Chef America

Tell me what you eat...and I'll tell you what you are...

Ahh yes, Iron Chef! The insta-classic has gone American. I remember them trying to Americanize the Japanese cooking battle show before with Shatner, but they totally failed...not because of Shatner, though. They failed because the layout of the stadium was weird and there was none of the original Iron Chef eccentricism or camera work. It looked like the producers of the firist attempt took the Japanese show, spit shined it by removing whatever made it "tv magic", and Americanized it much like many Americans consider Velveeta to be quote, un-quote "cheese".

This second attempt gets it right. The stadium has that same "holy cow they must have spent a lot of money--I want one--mmmm, 40000 BTUs--are they serioius?--yes, deadly serious" look and feel to it. They also have a somewhat eccentric Chairman who is Kaga's actual English-speakng nephew (or so he says he's related). They also have Alton Brown commentating (unlike the Shatner version with the guys is the 70s yellow commentator jackets who had no idea what was going on). Alton was a great commentator and added to the color. And lastly, the camera work was very similar to the Japanese version. You can tell that the producers, directors, cameramen all studied the Japanese progenetor quite carefully to translate the frentic-yet-controlled mastery of the chefs to the viewers.

So far there are only 4 episodes, but I hope they continue on with the series and the new Kaga gets ever increasingly weird.
