I've been in the software biz for over 5 years and haven't been paid overtime ever. I mean it's ok, but there are some weeks when I wish I did get overtime because I practically live at work. But then I see this: MSN Money Plus â?? Extra: Overhaul redefines overtime pay rules
Excerpt:
Who loses? Pharmacists, funeral directors, embalmers, journalists, financial services industry workers, insurance claims adjusters and human resource managers. All are specifically exempted from the rules. So are management consultants, executive and administrative assistants, dental hygienists, physician assistants, accountants, computer analysts, programmers and engineers, as are chefs, athletic trainers with degrees or specialized training, or any employee with a two-year degree.
Who the heck thought of that one? So other people who work overtime may get overtime, but this law specifically excludes computer analysts, programmers and engineers...what a complete bummer! So it's ok to take an engineer and make him work 80 hour weeks for months on end and not pay him a cent more...I'm sure my employer is glad to hear that. I mean, I get paid a semi-decent wage (although it's barely enough to afford a 2 bedroom condo in the Bay Area) but still, it'd be nice to know that the federal government does not specifically discriminate against the people that build the software and hardware our world relies on namely engineers.
I really feel bad for the embalmers...I mean you have to prep a few extra bodies and you're not getting paid anything extra...how much does that suck?
