As the BBC prepares to release it's entire recording history online another company, British Pathe brings their 12 million still images and 3500 hours of video online for free. Why is it the Brits that are taking the initiative to create digital archives? Other than Amazon's "search inside the book" feature us Americans got no digital archive love. Oh, I know why: the big media companies are money-grubbing totalitarianists...that's right, almost forgot about the RIAA suing the bejeezus out of little Sally, your next door neighbor's kid. Pretty soon, we'll all be getting sued for playing music at a party simply because the guests haven't paid for the right to hear the songs. If this continues, we'll probably roll over into other areas of our lives: how about getting sued because we put different brand tires on our cars than the ones that came with the car or getting sued for putting filtered tap water into Evian bottles. Who knows when the madness ends? Pretty soon, American's will be getting their media from Britain not because the content is better, but simply because the terms are better.
