Wow. This goes deeper than I thought, way deeper. On top of their two new "Big Brothers" in pop culture/reach/advertising among other things, Apple announced they have over 200 Indie music labels signed and will have 400,000 songs by the end of this month.
In the immortal words of Keanu Reeves, "Whoa."
It's not just that Apple was the first, but it's because when Apple does something, they do it right. iTunes, iTunes Music Store, iPod, iPhoto, iWhatever-else-they-think-of is amazing. It works amazingly well. Together. Nothing else comes close. Period. This level of integration and control can ONLY occur when you control all aspects of the product. From the entry points to the content, player for the content, to the storage of the content. This will never happen with anyone else, not even Microsoft. I'm sorry to say it since Microsoft are the ones paying my bills, I think it'll be until hell thaws from Apple's freezing over that we'll see anything that gets even close to how Apple's stuff works. Good luck Windows Media Team!
