Apple - iTunes

Well, they did it. Finally. Buymusic.com doesn't have a chance against iTune's slick interface and effortless management/burning. The best part is I installed it on my laptop at work and guess what I found? One of the graphic designers here shares his iTunes library! So as I write this, I am listening to music streamed from his computer via iTunes for Windows (I bet he's on a Mac which makes this even cooler!). And guess what RIAA? IT'S LEGAL! Neener neener nEEEner! No one will be file sharing any more, rather, they'll just have all kinds of networked devices (Wi-Fi iPod anyone?) and access to everyone's library. So then it will go like this:

Someone will get the grand idea to start a group of users who "share" music legally by using iTunes music sharing and each person in the group will take turns purchasing music. In the end (ideally, in order to maximize cost/storage efficiency), there will be one "entity" purchasing one copy of a CD and sharing it among the few hundred million music consumers around the globe.

This of course is not viable. The only logical conclusion is that in a matter of a few years to a decade, all entertainment media content will be distributed via subscription services. There will be different service plans based on cultures. Americans will opt for an all-you-can-eat plan that gives them access to the entire gamut of services. Whoever creates that first will become rich. Very, very rich. Europeans and Asians will opt for incremental plans that give them a certain subset of content. For example a dance music service will become very popular among the clubbing set in various countries across Europe. At any rate, this is the only logical conclusion now that media has exploded into the digital. New technologies for securing access to the vast libraries of media will need to be developed because one lost username/password could bring the whole system to a grinding halt. Anyway, enough for that rant....
