BBC NEWS | Science/Nature | The long road for hydrogen
In the State of the Union speech last night, Bush actually devoted a minute or so talking about fuel cells and hydrogen power. He proposed 1.2 billion dollars in new funding for research specifically into this area.
While this is commendable, he did not mention how hydrogen is produced. Hydrogen requires an pretty large amount of energy to be released from water molecules. This energy can be solar, hydroelectric, wind, or plain old coal/oil burning. To quote the BBC article, "Using fossil-fuel-produced power to do this would be perverse."
Iceland rocks for looking like the first nation that will be free of nonrenewable power. Some people have it pegged for as soon as 30 years. I hope the US will not be too far behind.
