I used to want to learn how to play Mahjong or MahJiang as it's called in Mandarin. After reading Mahjong for Dummies, I'm rethinking whether it'd be wise to try to learn this arcaine and convoluted game. Just the setup of each players hand requires about 10 pages of explanation. I don't think I'll ever be able to figure out this game...it's just too crazy for me.

I am thinking of starting a Mahjong club every Thursday evening at a small coffee house in Long Beach, CA. It is open to people of any age, race, gender, and sexual orientation as long as all partipants can fully enjoy the game, which will be a simplified Japanese version. Simplified because the scoring system and a few other rules are made easy enough for beginners to understand. E-mail me if you are interested..

After visiting a fishing village in HongKong and seeing 30 odd tables with people playing Mahjong I have always been interested.
Can anyone advise of a FREE internet game for beginner training or other sugestions.

The game itself isn't *too* hard, especially if you've played Rummy before. I was able to learn how to play in less than half an hour, and enjoyed it so much I'm having one of the people I was playing with pick me up a set this weekend.
It is probably a good idea to play without keeping score for the first couple of sessions, because the scoring rules are a bit more complex than the rules of play.

The Book of Mah Jong by Amy Lo is a very good book. I highly recommend it. It has all the information that you would need to learn how to play.

its very strategic and the only way people can get better and understand more is if they play over and again.. . .

Is it really that difficult? I just ordered a magnetic Mahjong Tile Set from e-judaica.com It should be arriving any day now. Your post has me wondering if I have the IQ to ever master it, though! I love the online games & have 2 versions on disc that I bought & play very often.
I have seen sites offeringa book called "Mahjong for Dummies" --I think I might need this. LOL
Don't give up...get a 'How To' guide.
Take care!
